VDO odometer in MotoMeter cluster?

Hi,

I recently purchase an 89 325is track car. The MotoMeter cluster's odometer doesn't work, although the speedo is fine. Checked the gears and they were fine, so I suspect something else wrong w/ the odometer electronics.

The motometer itself was a replacement for the original VDO unit. The PO just threw the MM in to replace the VDO rather than pull it apart. In looking at the VDO (he gave me as a spare), the gears are definitely shot...have a replacement set on the way right now.

Is it possible for me to just put the VDO speedo/odo into the MM cluster? Not sure how interchangable they are. Since I know everything else on the MM cluster is working, wheres the VDO I'm not sure about, if the parts are definitely interchangable they I don't have to worry about pulling it again.

Anyway, anyone tried swapping the individual components?

Hmm..hopefully 89's are on the 'interchangeable' list. I'll give it a try this weekend.

This is true as a general rule. I think James can clarify better than I, but cluster components that are pre 6-86 shouldn't be compatible with those that are 7-86 and later. That being said I once used a later VDO speedo in an early Motometer cluster and it worked fine.............
