    m10 -> m20

    I'm getting tired of my little 4 banger, and I've got an m20 lined up, but I'm still wondering about a few things. Does the m20 sit on the same engine mounts as the m10? can I do this swap without swaping my cross-members? if so, I'm already swaping an engine, so i guess a little more work isn't much, but whatever I can get away with, you know? also, I'm curious if the Getrag transmission is just a closer ratio tranny. If so I would definatly like to get one of them. :D Also, could someone explain a dogleg tranny? something about second being where first is, ect... i'm confused. Help me. :)

    the M10 tranny will not work with an M20, not sure about the engine mounts though.

      You can use your existing crossmember. Just use M20 motor mounts.

      Both M10's and M20's use Getrag transmissions, but they're different versions (240 vs 260). You have to use a Getrag 260.

      A dogleg shift pattern is like this:
      Code:
      R 2 4
      1 3 5
      As opposed to:
      Code:
      R 1 3 5
        2 4
      It ain't worth it to try and source and then pay for a dogleg for a M20.

        I would also recommend changing the suspension and brakes too, because of all the power ur gonna have after ur done.

          Cool. I may change the front suspension while I'm at it. Or at least get newer components and replace bushings and shiz. The brakes I'm taking off of the iA, and the rear axle is coming over fo sheazy. Gotta have the rear discs. Do you think that the rear disc brakes weigh more than the rear drums on 318s? I'm trying to figure out where and how I can ballence out the extra 200 pounds or so I'm going to get. As far as the write up on the dogleg, thanks for answering that. :) So it just sort of eliminates the gateway from the reverse gear? I don't understand the gain. However I was wondering, how do I change the gear ratios on my tranny? I want slightly closer ratios for more aggressive driving. Would that be custom work? I understand the basic workings of the engine enough that I could probally rebuild the top half of my m20 myself, but the transmission is of course a much more complicated beast to me. (P.S. I knew I needed a new tranny. :P thats whats holding me up. I have to get a tranny, and an AFM setup. I'm also wondering if I can use my stock 318i differential/driveshaft setup. I don't know if the ends will mate from the new tranny and the driveshaft. and if not, then I'll need a new driveshaft / differential combo. A 3.73 LSD would be nice, and I know a guy selling one... so I should figure that out soon. :)

            the easiest way would be to get a 4.10 LSD. you're going to blow up your small case diff with the M20 eventually anyway, so start saving. ;)
