Hey Techs, I have a question

Guys (gals too if Kelli is here), can I do valve guide seals on an M20 with the head on? I know the SBC trick of compressed air and pulling that crap apart, but can it be done on an M20?

    Thanks,
    Luke

AFAIK, yes that trick should work on the M20 as well.

the harder part will be compressing the springs and getting the keepers out, but if you can keep the valves from falling inside the engine you can probably figure it out.

With the SBC, you use compressed air in the spark plug hole to keep the valves shut.

There are special valve spring compression tools to get the retainers off with.

here is a pic of what the tool looks like to compress the springs, my tool doesn't have a brand or part number on it,

yeah, it's just harder with an overhead cam in the way. the tool I have requires the head to be off the car so it won't help you any. :p

ive seen it done on mercedes engines but i forget whether they pulled the cam first or not.

The Cam wont get in the way really, but you'll have a hell of a time trying to compress those springs with the lobes and rockers in the way, even pushing them aside would leave minimal clearance.

I'm basing this on the assumption the engine is in a car correct?

the reason it's so easy on an SBC is because its OHV, all you do is loosen the rocker bolts, twist em out of the way, then thread in the spark plug air hose coupler, presureize the cylinder then pull the keeper. Cam's gonna give you a headache.

Come on, give him credit, after all, his sig does list an o2 sensor DIY.

im laughing at myself, not him. you cant pressurize a cylinder with the valves open. im thinking of the mercedes engines ive seen which are DOHCs, and you have to pull the cams to get all the valves shut, then you pressurize each cylinder with compressed air while you pull the retainers and change the seals. unless you did it one at a time, which would be a huge PITA, you *have* to pull the cam/s, or on an m20, the rockers, in order to get the valves to close all the way so you can pressurize the cyls...

but robspeed you can close the valves even with the rockers in, you just cant close them all at one, youd have to go one or two at a time

but how are you going to pull the retainers and get at the seals? seems a lot easier to me to pull the rocker bridge/s and attack all of em. sometimes "shortcuts" create a lot more work than just attacking all out...

Nice one, maybe you'll learn a thing or two if you ever work on an E46
