Ah I just realized that we are talking in general.. I was thinking drop-in filters. I'm coming back from S52/M42 land.. I forgot about the screw on M10/M20 filters that most of these cars have. Can seams.. you almost got me..

Anti-drain valves seem to fail on their own just fine without a poorly manufactured filter. Usually we see those crudded up with filter media or nasty oil, both of which are (usually) results of a factory+ maintenance interval (15k+).

I used Purolater filters forever until I started working in a shop that carried proper current OE stuff. I actually think we have 6-7 old Purolater filters from back when they were on the BMW parts shelf.

I'm a bosch man myself, but I change my oil before the 3000 mile mark. Someone around here had high oil pressure and it was due to a bad Advanced auto/autozone branded filter.

If we are talking about the oil filter inserts, I use the STP oil filter for my 318ic M42.

I was in Auto Zone and just for the heck of it decided to look to see if they even stocked any oil filters for the M42 - and surprising as it was to me, they did have 1 brand in stock.

It is the STP oil filter, part # S7073. The box contains the same contents as included with the MAHLE kits - oil filter, small rubber O-ring, large rubber O-ring for oil can lid and (2) small metal washers. Price of the "kit" is $5.49 (online price for those who shop online).

The size of this oil filter is correct for the M42 and the quality/construction of the actual filter is very good (just as good as the MAHLE) as well as the additional parts included.

I have purchased these multiple times now and they fit & work exactly like the MAHLE oil fitler elements. This is a good "optional" replacement oil filter to the MAHLE and will work in the 318 M42 without any issues.

Here is the AutoZone link (the filter pictured is the exact filter in the box - the picture does not show the other parts that are included):

The STP oil filter design is similar to the MAHLE oil filter, except that the perforated outer sleeve on the STP S7073 encases all of the internal paper ribs.

              MAHLE OX91D pictured below:

              STP S7073 pictured below:

FYI & NOTE - The STP filter pictured above appears to be "tall & thin" in the picture, however, the actual STP #S7073 oil filter is actually "short & fat" like the MAHLE OX91D and is the correct size for the M42 engine that uses or has the oil can w/ aluminum lid. I think the online pic from AutoZone is just distorted due to their web pic sizing parameters.

Also note: The BOSCH replacement oil filter below (The STP # S7073 looks EXACTLY like the BOSCH):

I've never had any issues using the STP filter element over the MAHLE's.
