I would think the FI would always coem out on top.
Many race series use "special fuel" if you define it as anything other than what you can get at the pump.

Nascar rules date back to when time began hence the carbs. Rusty Wallace took his restrictor plate off at one of the super speed ways for giggles and ran flat out by himself at 235 mph.
Granted nascar has 600 hp and aero package so it easily possible. Carbs do work well but do NOT take atmospheric conditions into affect. Hence Carb icing on venturi's when was the last time you saw you FI system ice over with the exception of maybe the past winter due to the extreme cold. I can remember havine a carbed Capri and having that issue, Sucks ass. Choke add more fuel wrong answer gets worse.
Within reality FI is the way to go. If you want to be differant look for an old Weber sidedraft unit for an E21 323. Just don't run it in the winter as synchronizing 3 carbs together is a PIA.
I am with this guy, Nascar cars get like waht 8 mpg?
22 gallons of fuel / 40-45 laps at 1.5 miles apiece = about 2.75mpg.
Great gas mileage. :)
Some guys run slightly smaller carbs to bump that number up, though.

Carbs rely on a good vacuum signal to meter the fuel...Add a lumpy cam with a lot of overlap and low vacuum signals and with carbs your lumpy idle gets worse because your vac signal is lumpy causing inconsistent fuel delivery at idle. This means it's a real PIA to drive around at idle or just off-idle and generally you have to set the idle up to 1000 rpm or higher to keep the car running. FI doesn't have to rely on the vac signal so low end drivability is maintained even with aggressive cam profiles. FI is definately the way to go from idle to redline and all around performance.
I'm not knocking carbs...For a part-time ride they would be a definite "WOW" factor. That said, however, if you drive your car all the time through any kind of weather and take it on trips through varying altitudes you can't top a properly operating closed-loop FI system. If you only drive your car in SoCal or Florida or the track and/or don't have to deal with months of erratic and/or cold weather by all means slap some carbs on there and be happy with a "different" E30. Otherwise trick out the FI system and be comforted in that whatever comes your way you'll be covered.
..yeah just wanted to state those points beacuse it looked like people were saying carbs are 100% garbage. I concur with the other side to them especially the points some of you made about the weather factor.

I've also drivin a nova and couger with some MASSIVE cams and there isn't any drivability problems at all. Driving in parking lots Is great, there's nothing wrong with the cars, throttle responce's are 100x better than any of my fuel injected cars..
BTW: MPG on the nova is 14.. :shock: Not that bad for a 350? :oops:

Was it yellow? WE just resto'd one last year that had been "in storage" for 4 years...
Nope Chris it's a nice Burgandy style color. It needs some serious work but you don't go giving away 58 with Hubermiller tops. Granted it need a full fabric cover but the wooden bows were intact and it has a whopping 36 hp.
