    E34 getrag 260 "i" different from E30 getrag 260?

Are there any differences between the E34 525i(m20) and E30 325i 5spd trannies? Gearing/mounting/output/input shafts? Please reply asap,

-I've searched, but didn't find anything
-Didn't post in tranny section as I need quick reply and this is "general" question.
    Thanks guys!

thanks man, did you find out anything? I looked at real oem, and it does seem like the gearing is a bit higher maybe?

The numbers I have for a Getrag 260 (assume from E30) are:

            1: 3.830
            2: 2.200
            3: 1.401
            4: 1
            5: .810

No idea on the E34 version, if it IS different. Getrag also tacked on a /# to the end of their series designator (ex: 260/5) for certain applications.

I don't know the answer to this, but:

              E30 M20 260/5.15-TNW p/n is 23 00 1 221 205

              E34 M20 260/5.16-TNZ p/n is 23 00 1 221 332

So just by comparing part numbers, I would imagine that they aren't interchangable, but I'm pretty sure it's one minute difference that either doesn't matter or you can swap something small out for its E30 counterpart.

I looked in the "e30 restoration bible" thinking that it might have something about the differences, but no enough to answer your question..

just to clarify. The car runs beautifully!!!!

The differences between E30 and E34 getrag 260 (talking about late "I" models)

-rear output flange is bigger on E34

-rear output shaft is bigger (machined it a bit & front section of driveshaft, fitted no problem)

-front pilot bearing guide sleeve is different

What I did to make it work:

                        -swap the guide sleeve
                        -swap the output flange
                        -machine rear output shaft

Not sure about gearing as it seems the same. @70mph ~3700rpm (showing 75 on E30 speedo as they do lie @ ~5% ) w/ 4.10 open differential & 195/65/14 912's

Interesting, didn't you have any problems with gearbox carrier?

We tried to fit E34 Getrag 260 to E30 325i...no luck, E34 G260 fits to m20b25 perfectly but it is rotated CCW for a few degrees so that E30 G260 carrier doesn't fit.

Differences (between G260) can be seen here...from left to right, E30 325ix, E34, E30 325i. Green lines on E30 run on the middle of housing almost directly to upper left bolt on bell housing. Red line on E34 misses the upper left bolt for more then an inch. So there is an explanation for CCW rotation...

Sorry for old threat digging :D

the Getrag in the middle is only for early E34s with an M50. it was never sold in the USA.
