I used spacers to move the steering column about 1.5" lower than stock. It requires removing two shear bolts and replacing them with long m10 bolts.
Once the shear bolts are removed and the new ones are threaded in, it is easy to move the steering wheel vertically to position it as you would like. There is no viable way to move the wheel closer to you, other than using a spacer/quick release as I did.
The process on an airbag steering wheel is VERY different, but can still be done. The input angle of the steering wheel may also be chosen with the airbag wheel.
Be prepared to severely modify your steering knuckle if you drop your steering column and have an e36 steering rack

the knucle is what i thought wuold give trouble. with an e30 rack do you not have to modify the knuckle?

sorry to bring up the old thread, but i have a e36 rack and would really like to drop the steering column an inch or two as i run low sparco seats and the wheels seem waaay up there for comfort
How exactly will i need to modify the knuckle to make this happen?

        Thanks
        Alex

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Has anyone tried putting spacers? will this cause binding?

Holy old thread. To answer your questions; yes and no. I only have 2 nuts as spacers and it probably lowered the wheel 2-3". Keep in mind that I have ripped out the lower dash and all of the column surround trim so I dont know what modifications would be required to make it look stock.

I've also heard of people putting an entire e36 tilt colum into an e30 to make it adjustable instead of fixed in the lowered position

i swear i saw a calypso e30 vert in PA with an e36 tilt column. It also had an s5x swap. I'm not sure why it was getting parted, but i bought a dash and a pair of mk2 gti recaros w/e30 bases welded on from the guy.

E36? My gf has an e36 m3 and her steering column doest tilt. I was thinking of doing this because i hate how it sits so high up. I dont mind it being permanent, if it ever becomes a bother i can just remove it :)
