Automatic transmission fluid in manulal tranny

Today I decided to replace the tranny fluid with new Castrol Synthetic Fluid. As I opened the drain plug, guess what?! Red Automatic Tranny fluid! I don't get it, is this okay or has my tranny already suffered horrible damage due to the different viscosity of the automatic tranny fluid?
I don't know why the last owner did this, is this common practice?

some GL's are different colors.... put new fluid in and drive it see how it goes....

ATF is just lubricating hydrolic fluid... as long as there was enoguht in there it should be ok

It's supposed to have ATF. BMW has been using ATF in their manual trannys for a while now. Get Redline ATF.

I was hoping someone would touch on this.. ;)

If you read instructions on Redline MTL, they say to use Redline D4 ATF in transmissions that require ATF. I dunno, I'd just rather take their word for it.

Okay, That same day I drained the automatic tranny fluid that was in there and replaced it with Castrol Full Synthetic Gear Fluid. I don't know if it's the placebo effect, but i swear, she runs smoother now and gears change more smoothly.

Well the only E30 thats meant to have ATF in the MANUAL box is the 318IS, the new E46 and E36 M3 cars use AFT in the box, its meant to be better and when the box is cold you can change gear with ease. I use ATF in my box and its great.

you can still run ATF in the older E30 transmissions, I've also seen many reccomendations for it.

Considering I have a 318is, I guess ATF it is.

andrew- either you're confused or you meant to say they use MTF in the e36 and e46
