Has anyone done this swap ?

Do you lose much torque ? or pull when going up hills ?

having a lighter flywheel will never alter actual horsepower or torque. the flywheel just stores energy and smooths out the pulses from a running engine. so your engine will free-rev up and down quicker, and accelerate maybe a bit quicker. i doubt you would notice any difference going up hills; a 20lb weight spinning really fast will store a good bit of energy, but not that much, and not for that LONG.

i think of doing a light flywheel in terms of acceleration as lightening wheels and tires... wheels and tires don't spin as fast, but there are more of them, and they weigh more, and have larger diameter.

wouldn't the lightend dual mass flywheel from metric mechanic be a better idea since you only need to replace the f/w? I'd like to hear some results/experience with that mod.
I have a new Sachs Sport clutch and a new starter so I'm not wanting to replace these parts.

You dont have to replace the starter, just the pinion gear. And from what i hear its supposed to be a big deal in the 318s

it'd be tough to lighten a dual mass flywheel to the extend that you can a single mass, at least it seems that way to me. Besides, if you're pulling the tranny, the 325i flywheel is not much more work. not to mention having a clutch that can hold more power. Win-win situation if you ask me.

Lighten the single mass flywheel and enjoy your new found throttle response.

it's not worth tossing my new clutch, I'd have to go for the dual mass. I'm sure MM has done a decenet job in making it lighter, anything would be an improvment but I'd like to see/hear people results not opinions.

my point is you can only lighten a stock flywheel so much. starting with a dual mass which weighs what, ~28lbs, you'll can lighten it to what, 20lbs? that's still 5 or so pounds heavier than a STOCK 325i fly. I'd be interested to see what MM does with dual mass wheels, as I can see your desire to keep your stock clutch

I agree with what Rob is saying, but stock M20 flywheels are about 20lbs as is. My machinist lightened my M20 flywheel to 15lbs, Jordan's is 12.... just depends on what the guy is comfortable with doing. I did remove my harmonic balancer which is another good 4-5lbs, so the difference is nice.

is where I got my numbers from FWIW, but i've never personally weighed either flywheel

And stuMC's car with the 8lb flywheel revs like a *gasp* honda, it rocked

Well I weighed mine stock, it was approx. 20, I think others have verified that.

I was shocked with my rev response after the swap. Of course the revs were pathetic with the torque converter, but my car has the best response of any E30 I've personally been in before.
