i look at my shift lever, and my clutch pedal, and it is definitely a manual car. but i look at my door sill, and it says 325e / A? wasn't this a designation of an automatic car? i'm only the second owner and the previous owner was some old lady. weird.

IT STANDS FOR AUTOMATIC!!!
That's the sticker off my '86 325. As you can see, there it says USA to indicate that it's a US spec car. Now, if you look on the line below that where it says "Vehicle capacity", there are 2 sets of numbers, 984/940 lbs and 446/426 kg. The pair of numbers after the slash are for the automatic, the pair before the slash are for manuals. It's that simple.
Now, some cars don't have that "/A" designation because either the specifications for the manual and automatic are the same or an automatic was never offered. Likewise, some cars only have the A on them (like 740iA) because it was never offered in a manual transmission (in the US, at least).
