Tick tick tick tick from shifter area

I have an early shift console style car and today it started making a tick tick tick noise that is speed dependent. If I have the shifter all the way to the right (5th) it gets louder, and if I go the farthest I can push it away in 1st, it goes away. Forward and backward don't seem to change anything. I looked under there and could not see anything obvious that would be doing this.

Most of the parts are new, but I recently had a problem where the tranny bracket became unmounted from the body while driving (dealer last touched the car and they bolted it back up at their cost). I'm thinking it has to be something related to that, since the tranny was sagging and there was a lot of pressure on the flex disc.

Any ideas? I'd like to be able to drive this weekend. Thanks. :?

Possibly figured it out...tell me what you guys think. Stay with me here. The sheet metal console is attached at the front to the transmission and in the rear to the body, right? I think when the transmission bracket dropped, it pulled the console with it and bent it. It appears that the passenger side forward bolt that points downward is scraping on the harmonic balancer. At the rear, the console appears to be shifted to the passenger side about 3/4" also.

i have the same problem as well, mainly in Reverse when i'm back up, it goes crazy. In First gear, it makes the noise, but you can't really notice. If i let the engine slow it'self down it makes one tick tho (on occasions).

I have the same problem, which started when I ran atf in the transmission for the the winter.
Still there, even with 80w 140 in it.

When you move the shifter over when you are driving, do you feel the shifter vibrate? I had this problem in my car after I shifted hard one day. Basically its the selector rod (the bar in the picture going from the bottom of the shifter to the tranny) was rubbing on the harmonic balancer. Was even more appearant when I installed a short shifter. Then I simply bent the selector rod away from the harmonic balancer.

If you can get under your car, look and see if your selector rod has marks on it from rubbing on the harmonic balancer.

              good luck,

              matt

When I had the short shifter put in, I had them replace the selector rod and bend it to clear the balancer. It's pretty damn close, but it doesn't hit. It looks like a bolt from the sheet metal console is rubbing it, there is a nice line around the ring where the paint has been worn away. The front mounts are on securely, but the rear mount is crooked for some reason. The console is somehow bent and causing this. I might try and bend it up to clear it today.

I have an occasional rub of the vibration damper (it's not a harmonic balancer) on that bolt too because I bent the damper slightly when I was replacing the flex disc and center support bearing.

Beej, I have the same problem you are having. I don't think my selector shaft cuold be rubbing anything though... because I removed my harmonic balancer, and IIRC I had just enough clearance from the selector rod to the flex disc with my Z4 3.0 lever.

Let's drive fast and have fun.
