Probably a stupid question, but as i was cleaning the trunk of my cabrio today, i noticed, where the battery is, there was a large box looking thing. Upon removal, its a heavy ass weight. I'm assuming this is to simulate the weight of the battery, since it's in the engine bay.

Weight balance, more than anything.

:up:Originally posted by hotghiasi'm leaving the "ballast" in the trunk, unless i remove serious weight from the front of the car, too. i've heard it was for weight distribution (handling). i figure the bmw engineers knew what they were doing.

Never seen this in a UK E30. I dont think this would make that much of a difference on the handling.

I removed mine since I have a large sub box that sits right over the rear end. I figure without the 50lb lead weight and the heavy spare tire my stereo system off sets the difference and balances it out... I haven't put the car on a 4 wheel scale but I'm think I'm close. The handling feels the same with or without it.

I could also be there to help with traction but since I now have a lsd I don't have traction issues any moreComment
