    Official o2 sensor thread

    After an hour of searching o2 sensor and oxygen sensor I have found no such animal, at nearly $120 for a plug and play unit what are all the options? Even the u-add-a-plug sensors wind up at nearly $70, I've read that some use mustang sensors, how has this worked in the long run and most importantly SMOG inspections? I don't mind the price for one, but I have several cars to replace, and hopefully this can help others on a budget!

    This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.

      Makes it a consolidated thread to the next guy who goes searching can find some useful information, or can build on information given here, just little fragments are found in other posts.

          Basically there are a lot of different sensors that will fit the bung in the exhaust system that are all the same. The problem is the wiring. You can solder you're old connector onto a new sensor, problem solved except from what I understand the wiring used is terribly difficult to solder. If you search there is a how-to using a unit from a dodge stratus at around $45 IIRC.

            this thread is in no way offiicial... is this supposed to evlve into a DIY or are you asking how to hook up a mustang sensor? AFAIK all you have to do is wire up the heater element properly and connect the other wires. BTW what kind of thread does this sensor use to thread into the bung in the exhaust manifold?

              bmw's and mustangs both use the same bosch sensor. Why would you think there would be any diff in smog??

                  I don't know how true or substantiated it is but i've read on the intraweb (what a trusted source of information it can be) that you aren't supposed to solder O2 sensor connections because it can change the resistance of the circuit minutely and since the O2 sensor produces very low voltages it can affect the signal produced.

                    88 M3

                    $37 Bosch universal 3 wire O2 sensor coupled and heat wrapped onto the OEM wiring.

                    Pretty much identical to the OEM 3 wire it replaced. I forget the number but I'm sure it's on S14.net somewhere if you search.

                    Noticed quicker response on the AF meter right away. Passed smog.

                    My mechanic buddy called me a cheap ass. I smiled and said, "yup, I'm not into paying $100 for wiring and a connector I already have."

                    Now on the E39, I opted to just get the NTK OE replacements since the E39 has the temperamental OBD2 electronics that monitor everything and I couldn't find an exact universal substitute.

                          i think the point of using a mustang sensor is cuz its cheap... a wideband not so much, i still want one though
