93-Octane MarkD chip in testing, feedback

I spent a few hours over at Mark D'Sylva's house yesterday afternoon, he developed a chip with ignition and fuel configurations that will need a minimum of 93 octane to prevent detonation. This is for the M20B25, 173 ECU.

When I arrived, I had a 1/3 tank of 91. We put the chip in anyways, and went for a test run. Sure enough, the pinging above 4500RPM was intense, and I wouldn't dare go above 5500 WOT. We stop off at a Sunoco, and fill up with 94 (I love Canada). If you didn't fail high school math, you'll realize the mixture in the tank is now 93. Another set of runs, and the pinging all the way up to redline (6900 or so) is gone. The acceleration difference is noticeable, especially in the lower gears as the rush to redline I've grown accustomed to is shorter. In the night I visit the freeway and make a few runs north of 130mph. Feels good, above 6000 in 4th is now useful.

The changes made were the advancing of timing and a slightly richer fuel mixture. The largest changes were made in the 3500-redline area, which makes for a nice high-RPM feel. Note that the bottom end wasn't changed much, so the known torquey feeling of his software is not affected. These changes are made from a 91 octance version of the chip, which I previously had in my car. That said chip is also in its 4th or 5th update, itself particularly aggressive.

Anyways I'll be running the chip for the next 2 weeks, then it will be released to the public. If you're interested in putting in an early order slightly discounted (cheaper than the 91 octane JC, shipped) PM me and let me know.

Does this guy go outside the E30 realm? Like the 513ecu 95 S50 with injectors, coils, bigTB, 3.5HFM, and exhaust realm?

Possibly a chip tuned for 100 or 110.
    Im now E30less.

      I assume you mean 413 DME, not 513. Didn't most 95 M3's have a 506 DME?

Have a look at my site www.dsylva-tech.ca and you will see what else I offer. There are chips I developed that are not on the site yet, such as a chip for a 1998 M3 motor that was transplanted into a 95 E36 with EWS. I can also supply chips for the 413 DME with EWS (grey label) with the EWS removed.

Can you post some of your Dyno charts? I was on your site last night and there is none listed. I have a M50 swap and access to 94 and below pump gas but 94 going away soon. So 93 would be best. It is a 413 non ews box.

I also have an ews chip from JC that I can't use, want it in a trade in to look at there software?

As soon as I get mine and put her in, I can compare it to the JC chip I have now. And then run at the 1320 or dyno it eventually. Of course, the #'s will be a little higher because of the M30 injectors/AFM, but should still be a decently nice comparison of JC vs. Mark D 93oct.

I also am hoping for better gas mileage, as more advanced timing should yield that. But that really takes a backseat to a better pull and more hp.

I'm interested in these. I remember the days when his chips were like $60 though, I wish they were like what, $200 now?

blah yeah, 413 EWS box. Of course that is no matter if you dont include EWS in the programming. Maybe I should just get a 92-94 413 so I can switch back and forth easy.

I never sold chips for $60.
You must be thinking of those $60 eBay chips :P

I had planned on selling for $50 less than Dinan and JC, but for awhile I had an introductory price of $150 or so. At $199 USD for most chips, they are a great deal for the performance you get.

Yes, but from what I understand you are just a garage enthusiasts tuner right? It might be a bit less than Jim Conforti, but the JimC stuff is tried and true, and there are dyno charts for all the big name brand chips.

TJ- I'd suggest asking an e28 or e34 m5 board what they think about this 'garage enthusiast tuner'

As for the charts, you actually believe the dinan marketing? LOL

All I know about this guy is that Mystikal pimps his products for him and in the E30 realm, he is pretty unknown. I don't know why I would be browsing M5 forums, so for that reason I don't know what they think of him.

And Rob, that was a lame pot shot man, would you actual think that I believe Dinan's garbage?

what are you cap'n? Do you have full fledged backing from BMW NA to tune and spec your e30? :P

I may be out of line here, but when an person who is actually in the BMW business expresses enough interest to actually post on our little board, a little consideration should be in order. But what do I know. Jim Conforti never responds to my emails *shrug*

I'm glad he has the time for us also. I would like to see some sort of charts before I plunk down cash for another chip. I have 3 now and a forth well can't justify it yet.

Unless I can get trade in credits for 2 cause I'm keeping the stock one.

So you really don't know much, congratulations. Go here: http://www3.sympatico.ca/mdsylva/feedback.htm

A simple search on EAT or Mark D'Sylva or Ultrachip on Bfc brings up many responses too. And it doesn't matter if he isn't in the E30 world much anyways, BMW ECU tuning isn't chassis related. If he can tune an M30 or S38 for power an M20 isn't exactly alien.
