325e only runs with starter engaged

So my engine is at 530,000 km and I wasn't going to drive it but had to get gas for my other car. So i start it up and it starts fine and i drive it to the gas station, put some in the bmw and the rest in a jerry can. I try to start it and it does but as soon as i let go of the key it dies. Ive gotten the bmw to a place where i can park it for now simply by running it with the starter engaged for 10 seconds at a time. Im 90% sure its electrical as the engine runs with the starter engaged. Is there a relay that I should check that sends power to the fuel pump when the key hoes to run or something?

So if it dies as soon as you take the key out of the start position, maybe check the ignition switch? When the key is put in the run position, do all of the normal lights turn on? Also, look at all the fuses.

Yeah, seconded- I'd start with the ignition switch itself.

TobyB jbontke Yes all the normal lights turn on and ya that was the first thing i did was check all of the fuses. What else would i check regarding the ignition switch?

When you let go of the key and it dies, it is as if power is no longer supplied to the ignition subsystem. I am assuming all the normal lights are on for that position after it dies. You could test the ignition switch and make sure its still sending power to the car when it does, that would rule out the ign switch. Then I would move to the ign coil and make sure its still being supplied power when the car dies (maybe use a noid light). A bently manual is your friend here. Also having wiring diagrams would be good as well.

Oh thats actually a good idea i didnt think of that and no actually the lights die when it goes from start to run so im thinking its possible it is the ignition switch
