econometer all or nothing

My econometer recently started showing either off the chart good mpg, or zero mpg.

I added a MAF recently, and changed ECUs recently. And I have had everything from the intake manifold back off the car, including the injectors out to be cleaned.

Any ideas about where to start looking? I guess the obvious would be to try the old ECU. Does anyone know exactly what feeds the econometer?

O2 sensor is another thing to chk out. My econometer would either be a 0 or 40mpg. I thought it was a gears at first. After I changed the O2 sensor, econometer went back to normal.

the econometer doesn't take anything from the O2 sensor.. the fact that it worked after you changed it was lucky coincidence.

it's probably just a loose wire. The econometer takes a conditioned signal from the ECU (injector PW) and speed to calculate MPG. Maybe a loose wire on the back of the cluster, or a bad solder joint, or loose at the ECU.. but definitely not an O2 sensor.

went back to known good ECU with no luck. Having other trouble, including problems with my c191 connector. That may be causing the econometer issue. Will try to keep the thread updated...

Mine worked fine until I messed with my SI board. So that may have something to do with it? Now mine bounces around and occasionally appears accurate.

2 or 3 times a year mine works.

Does your SI reset? If it doesn't then that is the most likely cause of the problem. Get a new board and everything will work!
