    Winningest Racecar Ever?

The M3 is noted as the winning-est racecar in motorsports history (paraphrased - I don't recall the exact claim to fame).

I searched and couldn't find a clear answers, so I thought I would ask the r3v:
    1. How is it measured, number of wins in a year?
    2. Is this in touring car only or across all race series?
    3. Is it in a certain class (or classes)?
    4. Is this for production-based only?

    Thanks!

That makes sense. Hard to comprehend in light of other cars that dominated, like the Quattro and 911 :p

I believe it was overall race car. Just not one class. Which gave it the title.

I thought it was the winningest car in "touring car" racing.

Indeed. And they were very good but never really had much factory support as rally competition wasn't seen as glorious as closed course racing.

Lee, how do you interpret the poster, "winningest" in the touring car series or winningest touring car in general, spanning all where it competed?

I honestly don't know for sure. I guess I should reopen Jeremy Walton's book "BMW 3 series" where a lot of inside info is released. But my interpretation is that it is the car that has the more race wins in touring car series.

According to BMW Motorsport's own promotional video, it says the following: "... its mission, close to production touringcar racing". And later on : "From 1987 to 1992, the M3 dominated the tourringcar racing scene". Therefore it might be Touring car series.

Okay, then it makes sense that BMW isn't crowing about the "most wins" title in US advertising...

Porsche has won over 28,000 races in drifting, road racing, endurance, and rally racing. I know they have different models in this count but a large portion is the 911. And i think it exceeds the count for most races won by one model of car more than the M3 over all.
