I run the 17x9 (et22) on the rear of my E30, with either 245/40's DOT R's or 240/625's slicks
But I have a E28 5er rearend which is closer in track width to the E30 M3.
Can't use them on the front as they don't have enough clearance for the BBK.292rwhp E30 :D -
What? I didn't think the E28 Rear Suspension, mounts to the E30 Body? Different mounting points.sigpic

They are only very slightly different, same style though so easy enough to adapt.
The harder part is converting to use the rear coil-overs of the E28, means new shock towers are req'd, and the old upper spring perches need to be removed from the body.
But worth the effort if you need a strong rear-end, and the late E28's have better trailing arm geometry (12° vs 15° sweep angle) and toe control links.292rwhp E30 :DComment

I had a very similar setup a few years back. Here's my '88 330is on E36/Z3 5 lug susp. 17x8 M-Systems with 205/40 tires. Unfortunately, the 6 cyl Z3 rear end is not very forgiving to low offset wheels, so it rubbed everywhere. Didn't end up running that setup for all that long.
