control arm clunk still after replaced

    control arm clunk still after replaced

    just typed this up and then somehow deleted it all awesome.

    shorter version:

    took old control arm off.
    took loli pop off old arm. hydraulicly pressed old bushing out and new bushing into loli pop.
    tried to get that lolipop/bushing combo on the control arm, 3hrs of that and decided to go to a machine shop.
    got a custom tool made and they had it done in 30minutes, including the time to lathe and hone a tool. (if you need it let me know)

    get everything buttoned up.
    clunking persists.

    hmmmm what could it be?

    motor mounts ARE shot, so that might have something to do with it. by shot i mean the top bolt that goes into engine arm things is not attatched to the rubber mount. yay.

    gonna replace endlinks and tie rods in hopes of fixing it.

    low speed wobble in steering. slight vibration at higher speeds.

    what does r3v suggest?
    btw, ima replace everything from here on out with poly bushings. F this mess.

    fun fact! the machinist asked if i had lubed up the parts, i saidy yep, wd40 and some used 30weight, he gave me that dumb stare. so here's a tip, use SILICON spray. that stuff made a huge difference.

    I'm guessing either your shock collar is loose, or your strut mounts are toasted.

      cracking in the shock mounts would be bad yes?
      so tighten everything down and see how it goes?

          Is there movement in the strut bearing?

            Yeah I'm with Ken, clunk sounds like it could be coming from strut related components.

                  yeah didn't have time today to look. gonna tear into it tomorrow i hope. had to help ill4noreason pull that motor from his 318.

                  either way im doing endlinks and tie rods. worst case i replace all the bushings and have a refreshed suspensions right.

                    ok so im ordering motor mounts tomorrow along with tirerods.

                    anyone see a downside to having solid aluminum motor mounts?

                        yeah, i've heard with other cars running solid motor mounts and 75D poly trans mounts makes for a damn good combo. it would have 0 flex under torque...isn't that good?

                          All that solid stuff is great for track cars where everything is beefed up to match, but you add stress to the other areas of your car that haven't been beefed up... And then of course there is the associated vibration, but that apparently doesn't bother some people.

                            well i wouldn't be just doing the solid mounts, i plan to re-do the entire suspension. the PO did some stuff, but if i re-do everything then i know its done right. what i plan to do with this car i dont think i can trust someone elses work or being unsure of anything...

                            i looked at my clunking noise today and it all looks fine...wtf. im taking it to a local bmw tech tomorrow for some diagnosing.
