    Help with Brakes

I checked the front brakes on my 92 iC yesterday, and the outer pad on the passenger side brake is completely worn down to the backing plate. The brakes are stock Girling, and the pads/rotors were replaced less than 10k miles ago. The other 3 front pads look barely worn.

I'm hoping the collective wisdom of the forum can help me diagnose the problem. Would this be caused by a stuck caliper piston, bad caliper, or something else worn out that's keeping the caliper from floating correctly?

    Thanks in advance!

A bad soft line or sticking caliper will be the cause of that.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

        Jim,

I noticed in a post of yours from another thread that you replace the guide bushings regularly on your Spec E30. My street E30 has 100k miles and I think the bushings are original. How difficult is the job as a first-time DIY? Any special tools required? Does the pad carrier need to be heated to get the old bushing out, and does the new bushing need to be pressed in?

        Thanks, Cory

Assuming we are talking about ATE calipers, You just pull out the old bushings (they may tear) and push in the new ones by hand. A bit of liquid soap makes it easier to install the new bushings. Girling calipers don't have replaceable bushings.

Sorry - should have been more clear. My calipers are Girling. So is the bushing not a wear item on the Girlings, or does the whole caliper need to be replaced if it's not floating freely?

Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks for helping out a fellow CCA member.

If the bearing points for the guide bolts are worn on Girling calipers replacement is the only option.
