How do I remove the rear half shaft bolt?

I'm going to be removing the 30mm? Half shaft bolt on the hub. It seems like the bolt is really shallow and the socket only grips about 2mm of it.
I'm afraid I'm going to strip it because of this. Does anyone have any advice for me in removing this?

What do you mean? The dust cap wasn't on either wheel.

There is no dust cap for the rear wheels. The nut doesn't have much of a head. to get all the engagement I can I grind most of the edge off of the socket as most have a good bit of rounding.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

If the rear half shafts are assembled correctly, the lock plate will be underneath the nut. So it can't be removed until the nut is off. See http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...37&hg=33&fg=40

It's the # 5 in the diagram, it slide over the nut to keep it it from coming loose. U can use a screw driver to kind of wedge it or pry it, them use narrow nosed pliers to pull it out.

Why do I remember lock plates with a large hex for the inner hole that goes over the nut, then the skirt is bent into the three indents? Maybe that was another car..

there's a ring (#5) that has 3 notches in it. they're not bent in though.
am i supposed to pull this out to gain better access to the bolt?

You need to pull the lock plate out. I used a screwdriver to pry it out. Did it last week.

yeah. at first i used grease. this got it stuck. after that i had to clean the splines twice to get it to go in with some wd40. it was tough.
