Inboard Disc Brakes

Alfa is one of the few makes I know of that did the inboard rear brake concept. About the only thing that makes sense with this idea is that it reduces unsprung weight from the rear suspension.....a good thing if you're tracking the car a lot and looking for every handling edge you can take advantage of. On an E30, this would seem like an awful lot of work for a very minimal gain.....costly fabricating work as well. Then there's the prospect of servicing these brakes....being inboard mounted they aren't as easily accessible. Also, without the protection of a wheel surrounding it, they would be more subject to damage from debris. I'm sure cooling can be addressed with some simple wind deflectors to channel air towards them. All in all, there's more negatives than positives to it. The easy way to resolve this is buy a car that's been engineered with this set up from the factory. I fancied Alfa Romeo GTV-6s for a while.....still have a bunch of tech articles from European Car mag when they did a project car with one of these. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, see below....
Built from the late 70s to late 80s. V6 in front, transaxle in back, near 50/50 balance. Quirky and misunderstood....like the E30.
