DOT approval means little in terms of safety. DOT approval is based on a spec not an actual approval/testing process.

You can find lines which aren't DOT approved because the fittings don't meet the DOT spec but meet the TUV spec which are better.

I think SS lines are a waste of money for most people though. The rear lines are enough of a pain to do without having to do them again every year or so (which 90% of people won't do). I'd much rather use new rubber and not have to worry about it.

I've seen some, like UUC's, where the SS lines have a plastic coating over top of them. I assume those wouldn't have the same problems as just bare SS...?

the ones that have the plastic over them (i think its teflon or something like that) don't have this issue because they are sealed and protected. those are the best ones to get. but you have to make sure that coating doesn't rip or get torn.

SS Lines are a "wear item"

Replace every 2 years.
Mine are due to be replaced.
I'm running Goodridge lines, all season...salt/sand/snow/sun/rain. No issues.
I'm willing to bet it was damaged during install.

these were the ones with the plastic sleeve over the SS line. if they were damaged upon install, then its the shops fault, not mine. i dont mess with bleeding brakes and whatnot, when i can have a shop do it for $50. i would take a pic of the busted line, but they threw it away when they changed it. im going to go bitch them out for throwing it away now, i was just happy to get my car back, didnt even think of getting the part back.

Timely thread for me. I'm getting ready to replace my rear subframe bushings and was considering switching to SS brake lines while I had the rear apart. Guess I won't now!

Here's a thought. For extra protection on uncoated SS lines, what about using a piece of regular heat shrink tubing over the outside of it. It'd protect it from "pebbles" and such as stated earlier.

Yeah I was just going to say that. I had done did my lines before i had thought of something like it though. I guess slapping some duct tape on there just to keep dirt and stuff out would be better then nothing, but can anyone think of a better solution that wouldnt require line removal?

so in summary, i had them take off the stainless lines and put in all OEM lines.

But, $20 for all 8 lines?
Something doesnt seem right there....
