    Wrong pads?

I have a strange clunk coming from the front brakes when I brake.

I have Girling calipers on my 1991 325i sedan. I replaced the pads with some that were supplied by the PO in the sale, so I can't verify the p/n. I spun the wheel and had a friend hit the brakes, and I see that the pads shift and tap.

Could it be that I have ATE pads in Girling calipers? Am I missing some shims or something? Any other guesses?

I'm ordering the known correct pads, but I want to see if I'm missing anything else.

Girling and ATE pads are the same. You might not have E30 pads.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
