Rear wheel bearings carnage and a question, and a crap mechanic

So,i just took my rear trailing arms to get the bearings pressed in and the hubs and dust shields installed. The following is the "Professional carnage" please weigh in on if you think the new bearings are "Within spec" as the mechanic said or not.

He cut the dust shields, mangled them with pliers, then painted them so it looked "ok". Am I wrong here or what? Click the first pic for video

Fuck that, that is some significant wobble you have in the bearing/hub. Cut the dust shield? Lol.

Please post the name of the shop that charged you money for this atrocity of a job.

The bearing is not "normal" until the axle is through it and torqued. It will be loose until then. I can't comment on if it was installed properly, but i guess he pressed the hub back in the new bearing and forgot to put the dust shield on first. To remove the hub would damage/destroy the new bearing so he cut the shield to install it.

LJ851 that is my real question. How much play should it have? And now my dust shield is wrecked. Im worried the ebrake set up will not work well after what he did.

When the axle is through and torqued there should be zero play.

I would not be happy with that...AT ALL. I would Def make him buy new bearings and dust shields...and don't let him do the job again.

Which I do believe, but my concern was that the old bearing with 100k on them had less play, almost none.

Mistake #1 is that you paid for it. Sorry you're in this position.

You are correct, I did pay BEFORE I saw the parts. As soon as I asked to see the owner, they knew what was up, because initially they said he wasn't around. SURPRISE he was right there. and his office worker was all shady and acted worried.

The bearing is a double row unit and there are two inner races, one for each row of balls. The two inner races can move all around (play) and need to be torqued together to properly assess the feel of the bearing. Your old bearing prob felt better because it had already been torqued together and the press fit of the hub was holding it there. I don't see an axle in any of the pictures, have you installed it yet?

None of this matters if you are going to replace the shield, you will have to replace the bearing after the hub comes out with an inner race stuck to it like it usually does.

LJ I do appreciate all you say. I have read many of your threads and respect your opinions. I just got the arms back today and was very turned off by the play and the cuts in the dust shields. I was very hesitant to install the arms because of all the play, and shoddy dust shield work.
