    Bilstein Touring - Strut Question...

I read somewhere that the oil from the strut housing must be drained if strut is being replaced with BILSTEIN SPORT. My question is, do I still have to drain the oil if I am replacing the stock BOGE strut with BILSTEIN TOURING STRUT?

    Thanks in advance.

Bilstein tourings are twin-tube like stock, and have firmer valving then stock (more heat build-up) so I'd say you should have oil in there, just like stock.

The only reason Sports/HD's don't require oil to reduce heat is because they are an inverted mono tube design. The piston is actually within the part of the strut insert that is up near the mount, which is outside of the strut housing.

So in the below pic, looking at the two strut inserts on the left, the shiny metal tube outside of the yellow tube, normally covered by the blue boot, is what contains the gas, oil, and pistons.

JGood, I am sorry, "yes" to draining/removing the oil or replacing/adding new oil for Tourings?

I am actually doing this exact same swap this afternoon and was going to check with the BMW shop where I get the parts...

Aworthybrother, the cardinal seats are looking good!!!

I meant since the Bilstein Touring strut insert is identical in design to the stock insert, it should have the same install procedure as stock. If stock requires oil, you should probably put oil in. The only reason they say to drain it for sports is because it's a completely different design.

Oh, thanks for clarifying. Thought you were saying "Yes" to drain the oil.. I was ready to drain it this weekend :p. I got confused with replies from other forums as well.

Just to further clarify the final answer, my BMW parts guy said "no oil"...

As per the link I posted above from bimmerforums, the guy who called bav auto said the same thing - No Oil.

another similar discussion that says No Oil.
