    Tie Rods

    I have been wondering lately. I know my balljoints are toast on my tie rods and I plan on replacing them. What I was wondering is if it is needed to change the whole assembly. Or can I just change the tie rod end and be done with it? I guess a more direct question would be: what are the benefits of changing the whole assembly over just the rod end?

    Also, I seem to have no in or out play on the assembly where it goes into the rack so thats a good sign. This is what makes me want to change just the rod ends and call it a day.

    let me know guys

    Taylor, why do you think your tie rod ends are bad?

    balljoints are on the control arms, not the tie rods, even though technically they are actuaLLY A BALL JOINT, NO ONE CALLS THEM THAT.

      Luke,

      when I grab the rotor at 9 and 3 o'clock and push in and out I can see the ball joint moving and I can hear it moving as well. I know they are bad. But anyway I need a tie rod end, not a tie rod ball joint

        Best practice is to replace the entire tie rod. While most of the wear may be on the outer ball joint, there's probably significant wear on the inner joint.
        The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

                I wouldnt say that but replacing the whole thing is just as easy and it only takes a little more time and money

                    As long as there is no play on the inner it's perfectly fine to just change the outer.

                      I have a GOOD inner tie rod, but lousy outer end in my trunk if you want for a few bucks.
