Its been done, and discussed. You'll most likely sacrifice handling, and itll cost more than coils, but there really is no reason you cant. I believe open road tuning can put together a kit for you

I remember I looked into doing it with my MK3 Jetta and the major thing that stopped me was not wanting to buy the Chapman rear air struts required on MK3s because of how expensive it all was ($500+ shipping for just the rear) but since I was already running B&G coils on the car, the front was going to be cheap as shit to bag.

Look into universal front and rear bags from some of the bigger suppliers and see if you can get specs. Maybe one of the universal bags fit over top of the GC adjusters and can be used in place of the spring.

Here's an example of an VW MK4 strut out of the car that might give you an idea...

Basically, like the GC coilover strut tube modifications, you would weld the plate of the bottom kit below for the bag to sit on, install bag, and top plate.

It actually doesn't look too terribly complicated on a BMW since the rears aren't a coil-over type design. With some research and understanding you could definitely do it for under $3gs, possibly under $2gs if you find some good deals/get creative.

And for those that worry about the performance side of it... For a long time I believed the same and while air ride is primarily for riding low and being able to adjust height at the touch of the switch, these types of bags coupled with sport dampers don't ride like the floaty Cadillac air bag suspension you all may be thinking about. I'm not sure it's "track ready" per say but, with more and more cars going air in other "scenes" (such as VW) the performance air bag technology may catch up with the traditional standard static set ups before you know it.
