who cut the stock frt. perch off for a coilover set up?

I was wondering what is the best way to cut off the frt stock spring perch?..Id like to keep some of it on the strut...this way Id avoid having to weld the GC perch on.

2002Maniac I recall you did this?.....

Ill search as well......Im just rushing around at this moment.

    Thanks!

    Joel,

Lathe trim sounds like the best bet. I have some sandblasted 4-lug struts w/ the perch cut off that you can have for shipping.

why try so hard to avoid welding the proper perches on?

the problem with the stock perch is it's not concentric or completely flat. Your spring/adjuster might not seat right, and you don't want it moving around.

It didn't cost that much to drop off my struts with a welder and have it done. Avoided wasting time trying to cut the perches off myself too. Just for giggles I tried cutting it with a hacksaw - west german steel 1, hacksaw blade 0. I don't know what the welder dude used to cut them off, but they came back all pretty so I didn't care. :p

Since you called me out, I'll post this here :)

I just mark the perch with a piece of masking tape 1/8" above the weld and then make the cut with a sawzall. You could use a hacksaw I guess, but it might take a while. Then I use a file to clean up the rough edges left from the saw and paint with por-15. I have done 3 sets of struts this way and they work great. If you already had the struts out of your car, you could have them done in under an hour easy.

dont use a hack saw or a sawzall. it will take forever. you need to use a metal cutoff blade. it will cut the perch of in less than a minute. sawzall might work but it will be ugly.

I used a bandsaw, but I was shortening the struts at the same time.

i used a sawsall and it worked fine if you have any skill with one you will be able to just cut a strait cut all the way around and file doen the rest.
