So I fucked my (just replaced a few months ago) tie rods installing my new suspension. I got some lemforders to replace the old karlyns. (I know my spelling is wrong). When I cut the boot clamps power steering fluid just exploded in my face. The boot was almost completely filled with fluid. I don't remember that when I installed them last time. I'm assuming my rack is bad or at least a seal is. The car has 201,000 miles. Up until now the steering felt normal, but the fluid was a little low last time so I topped it off. I assumed it was seepage through the lines. Do I need a new rack?

I should mention that all the rubber on the under side of my car is being replaced. If I was going to replace a rack this is a good time as the car is up and I have a little extra cash.
If it's fucked then I don't mind. If I can use that stuff and get another 50,000 miles out of it then I will for sure. If it's just a band aid that will fail in 5K miles then I'd rather replace it.JOY IS AN E30...

I know from previous experience with my e46 (would assume the same for the e30). If the fluid is in the boots the rack should be replaced.Current: 1988 M3 - Henna/Black black alcantara

Your current rack will implode and kill small children if you don't replace it asap. There.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

Hey GG, You forgot to mention that little bunnies will die from the fluid seeping on the road, and when they go to try and drink it, SMUSH, right under the wheels of the guy behind him, who couldnt steer out of the way cause his fluid was low. And the Bimmer gods will strike down lightning on any one with there bare ass in the air if anyone does a band aid fix!
Sry. just thought that was funny.

sounds like your seals are fucked. replace or rebuild... and might as well replace with a better lock to lock. a rebuild will usually cost about 50-100 less than a new rack. guess it's up to you whether that 50-100 is worth the better steering ratio. something to think about before you do this though...if you buy a new one you will most likely have a limited 1-3yr warranty. If you get a rebuild at say Rack&Axle, you will have a limited lifetime warranty.

dude hilarious. I should have been a little more clear. I'm not itching to buy a new rack, it's just real convenient to do right now. Let me ask you this, how bad was your rack leaking and low long has the stop leak lasted?

Hasn't leaked a drop in about 5 years. I just pulled it out and replaced it with a '95 m3 rack while I was doing a suspension refresh. The best time to do a rack replace is when your motor is out - that's the easiest time to do it - dealing with bending the lines would be much easier.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment
