I am having odd symptoms. The car was off the road for 5 weeks and now it has periods where it does not want to re-center and the wheel is a little stiff. But, the key is in the morning the car steers and re-centers perfect. As I drive it the steering can get stiffer and it won't want to re-center properly. I replaced the rack 2 years ago and I checked the fluid and it is now Black. What might cause intermittent symptoms like this and why is it fine in the morning?
Anybody have a good understand of our power steering system?

The centering action in your car is caused by the castor in the front suspension geometry which does not care what time of day it is. Sounds like something is heating up and binding in the steering system, not allowing the wheels to center. -

I would guess trash in the rack. in the morning it would be settled, as the car moves the trash starts floating around and binding.
I would inspect the rack and lines for leaks and where contaminates could have gotten into the system. refill the rack with some fresh fluid if you want to give that a shot as well.'84 318i M10B18 147- Safari Beige

I flushed it twice today and will drive it again in a couple of days. If it is trash in the rack, what the heck do I do about that?Comment
