Also, I do not recommend cutting the internals. There is no use in ruining your warranty.
Your right, I checked it out and the nut was loose on the top of the strut. No more knocking noise hopefully

How does your car ride with the M3 springs compared to stock? I'm looking at doing this also but with Bilstein Touring struts/shocks.

        Spring---------------------Front(lb/in.)-------------Rear(lb/in.)

        Stock 325is----------------------118------------------------265
        Stock M3-------------------------114------------------------314
        Stock M3--------------------------140------------------------250

I wonder which springs you have. I take it the stiffer ones must be evo or vert springs
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

I'm curious about this also. Is itcorrect that the "is" would be stiffer than the M3? Maybe that's the '87 is springs?

I run e30 M3 springs and Billy sports on my sedan with no bottoming that I can feel. I wasn't aware that they were softer up front, but from the looks of it the difference is pretty small.
