what is this liquid inside the struts?

i just took my shocks out of the front strut assembly. there was a bad smelling goo inside the assembly. almost like the shock was leaking. however the shock looks to be in good condition on the outside.
do you think it was leaking, or is it something they put in there from the factory to keep the shock from rusting.

There is a school of thought that putting oil in the strut housings will help with heat transfer from the strut cartridges. I think it just makes a mess. That liquid could be an oil added or it could be fluid from a leaking strut. Kind of hard to know which it is at this point.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

If its a standard insert its oil. It does aid in cooling as it acts like a thermal conductor. If your running an inverted Bilstein DO NOT ADD OIL!!!!!!!
