The strut was moving up and down in the housing because the spacer(washer) under the strut collar wasn't there.
My strut mount was bad also. And i added a few washers which helped the binding issue whenever I made a u turn.Leave a comment:

I found the problem. The strut was not screwed all the way into the strut housing. Tightened it up with an oil filter wrench and no more noise!Leave a comment:

Like I posted, this happened to me after some time and it was the shock lock nut that had loosen, which holds the shock in the housing that was loose and the shock was loose in the shock tower.Leave a comment:

EXACT same thing is happening to mine.
I replaced lowering springs (Vogtland) with OEM stock springs because I did not like the ride with lowering springs.
After the install, I got the clunking noise. I can, just like the OP, jump on the front fender and replicate the noise. It seems I can only replicate it on the passengerside. And so now thinking back, I do remember putting all the washers back in place for the driverside but do not have memory of putting back the washers for the passengerside...
Any more updates from the OP regarding this matter? Was it the washers?Leave a comment:

The dotted line represents the damper.
The parts are oriented exactly as you see in the exploded image on the damper.Leave a comment:

Thanks. That reminds me that I looked up that diagram and have everything listed there. But what the diagram doesn't show is the top end of the shock as the last piece, so I'm unsure if billies have a washer there or if it's just supposed to be the "hat" (#9).Leave a comment:

Look at the R3V link in my Sig. Lot's of good info there...and an exploded view of the top mount.Leave a comment:

Wait, so how many washers are in this assembly? I *just* re-installed my strut, and I know I used all the washers that were there before, but with a car that has 300K miles on it one never knows what should be there vs what is ;)
I had two washers. On directly above the mount, and one directly below the mount, right between the mount and the plate. There was nothing between the plate and the shock. Is two washers the correct number?Leave a comment:

Yes dirty325ix. It's most likely you're strut mount. You can look at the mount under the hood and turn the wheel at the same time. When I did this i saw small cracking on top. When I removed it, I saw no real visible sign of damage, but I had the clunk. New mount everything is fine.Last edited by nickmcc92; 03-17-2013, 12:14 AM.Leave a comment:

if clunking is happening on the up and down motion of the shock, the nut the secures the shock to the housing is probably loose.Leave a comment:

It still clunked after I installed the washer and found out my strut mount went bad after the new struts.Leave a comment:
