    Quick coilover question

    Hey Guys,

About to place an order for some BC racing coilovers. THey have two different models, a 4cyl and a 6cyl. I assumed this was due to different spring rates, but apparently the 6 cylinder models have the 51mm struts. I have read that the 1991 318is has the 51mm struts, but does this apply to the 1991 318i? Just want to be certain which model to order. Thanks for the help.

As far as I know all strut tubes are the same (51mm) unless you have a M which is slightly smaller. I have done coilover conversions on 318 and 325's and I used the same parts for both cars.

They are not all the same. There are 45mm and 51mm sizes. I have seen conflicting statements regarding what size shocks late model 318i cars have. Any input would really be appreciated.

I would but do not currently have the car (it is at the shop) and would like to order these today. Has anyone here changed susp on a late model 318i? Please provide input.

Why take a chance? Call the shop and just have someone crab a set of calipers and measure... I'll take 10 seconds.

From what I can tell it was very early "early" models that had the 45mm strut tubes. Out of curiosity......why does it matter? you're going to a completely stand alone suspension that comes with everything you need. If you were going to buy a GC coilover kit or new shocks I could understand your concern with the strut size.

Not sure why it's a concern in this case.

Iron the bc gets welded to the stock knuckle but must fit tight around what's left of the stock tube when you cut it so it's centered and such.

Ah that makes sense then. I have never looked into BC before I thought it was the whole setup.

Yeah it seems all the 90-91 318s had the 51mm tube. Ordering those and will post back with updated photos!

All the information that I found said the 318 only had the 45mm strut tubes in 84-85 year models.

My late 318i from 1991 had 51mm struts.
