    manuel rack

ok, so my euro 318i has a manual rack and i plan on putting an m20 in it. I have a donor car and could probably do the power rack. If i did that id like to do power rack sans the power. Witht he manual rack i find it very difficult to drive at low speeds and autoxing was a hassel, which is what i plan to do alot of. Also the steering finds every groove in the road and pull the car in it. if im not paying carefull attention it seems like it can be dangerous.

noww i here alot of people that like the manual rack, my question is why? whats so great about it? another questions is, how easy is it to put the power rack into my e30 while having the motor out?

    thanks,
    andrew.

about as easy as taking everything out of the donor car to do with PS, ie pump, ps pump belt, resevoir, lines, fittings, and the rack it self.... pretty much it

You get a lot more "feel" out of a manual rack. There is a lot more feed back in the wheel since there is no power assist.

Dont do a power rack without the pump. Even if there is fluid in it.

I thought is is what most people did? I believe it's Matt who has been doing this for a while now without problems. As long as the rack is lubricated and there are no leaks, I don't see why it would be a problem.

Isnt a power rack without "power" harder to turn than a real manual rack? I dont think it really causes any technical problems. I just really dont see the point on a daily driver no having power steering.

Yes. It will be even harder to turn than your existing non-power rack.

Man, you guys must be weaklings. I took the belt off the power steering pump because the pump is toast, and I don't really feel like replacing it. It's not hard to turn at all, unless you're at a completely dead stop, and even then it just takes some effort.

I'll take manual steering over goofy overboosted power steering (like so many cars have these days) any day.

Because the e30's is soooo overboosted you get almost no feel from it. I must make it harder to turn in a parking lot when I drive every day. Track car I can totally understand the no pwr steering thing, but on a car you drive every day I just dont get why its so neccescary to have so much feel.

Stg 3's are actually very streetable, with Koni's they are no rougher than the stock setup.

i actually do like hte feel of the manual rack on the turn in, but i have to pull the wheel back when exiting the turn, thats myproblem with it. I know others who remove the ps from the ps racks the wheel snaps back when you let go of the wheel mid turn, correct?
Wheni let go of hte wheel mid turn, it will turn back a little but i gota pull it over the rest of the way.

Actually... I just got my Bilsteins back from being rebuilt. They should be on the car with the Jstocks hopefully by next weekend.
