    Tips on re-threading steering shaft?

Dude the alignment shop is liable for that.

They usually pull the wheel off to recenter it after an alignment. I bet they installed it without the spacer under the hub and torqued the nut all the way down till it bottomed on the splines, destroying the nut, backed it off, destroying the threads. Then replaced the nut and stacked washers in it? That's my guess. I'm willing to bet they did all that with an impact wrench too.

I know it doesn't help your situation but I would not give up until the shop pays for its mistake, either by replacing your column or paying you out for one. If they don't, turn to yelp, or seek out any other people who might have been screwed by the same place.

This kinda shit is why I don't take my car anywhere. I had my alignment done at a "race" shop with a good rep and they twisted up my brand new steering rack boots and tore them. Not going back to that place lol

Unfortunately this is my word against theirs. They swear that they never pulled the wheel, though I believe that to be untrue. I spoke with the shop that installed the camber plates (who subcontracted to the alignment shop for the alignment itself) and they were sympathetic but don't really have much leverage with the alignment shop. Since technically I did not deal with the alignment shop I have to convince the shop that installed the plates to deal with them and they don't seem willing to do that.

I may go to the corporate office of the group that owns the alignment shop. Still undecided.
