          Common myth:

          Cut springs handle like crap.

          Truth:

A springs stiffness is calculated using coil diameter, wire thickness, # of coils, and a constant for the specific material.

Cut a coil off and the spring gets stiffer! They wont be as stiff as aftermarket lowering springs but the car WILL HANDLE BETTER with appropriate damping.

Welding springs without proper heat treating is another story...
          Truth.

YAWN, this forum is a broken record. People keep talking out of their ass without knowing anything. Cutting the front springs is perfectly ok. The rears do make me worry though.

All a spring is is a coiled torsion bar. By cutting it youre reducing the leverage and therefore increasing the spring rate. How do you think the spring is made initially.

            Rate(n) = (ShearModulus)*(WireDia(n))^4 / ( 8 * (NumberOfActiveCoils(n)) * (MeanCoilDia(n)) )

This formula is used and this is how you get the required amount of coils, coil diameter, and overall length of the spring.

So I hope it is obvious why I had to weld the rears though. You cant just hack off one end because it won't sit in the perch correctly. I will bump this thread in six months when my car is still riding on welded springs I have no worrys. If they made it this long under my abusive driving I think they are going to be OK. I just wish people could experience how it rides.
Josh did you ride in my car?

No, I haven't ridden in either of your cars yet, and actually, I'd like to take the iX for a spin sometime. I've never driven one, and I'm very curious to see how differently they drive.

Its not going to kill him, but its by far the worst option for a suspension upgrade. Anyone saying hes going to die sounds like a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles or my mom.

Id still save up 100 bucks for a set of used springs. Even m3 springs would be a better alternative.

When I was a kid there was a racer who had the nickname "Mad Dog". He was like Bogart in High Sierra.
He used to say, "Everybody calls me "Mad Dog" just because I drove that car with the front axle welded back together!

Out of curiosity, how many coils did you cut for that drop in the front?

1 1/2 coils off the front. 5 1/4" over lap on the rears if I remember right.

Still riding safely on welded springs I might add... Same ride quality as before.
Here is a pic of the rear.

                                So sad.
