Bilstein is just a brand name Bilstein sports and HDs have the same valving, but the HD is designed for stockish ride height and the sports are designed for lowering springs.

yes bilstein is the brand but some are just labeled "Bilstein for e30" whereas others are "sport" or "HD", are the non labeled ones the "touring" are they softer than the others?

yes they are softer. hds are a bit stiffer, the sports are revalved, have a huge piston, and the piston is shorter for using lowering springs with.

Yes, the tourings are for a softer ride. I have them in the front right now and they feel great. You still get the lovering, but the ride feels very responsive, yet won't kick your ass over the bumps. I have eibach springs.

In fact the piston on Bilstein sports is thinner than most of any e30 front shocks. The thick metal tha comes out from shock is in fact the "pump", bilstein shocks are constructed "upsidedown", so the real piston mounts to the bottom of the insert housing and upper mount is on "bottom" and of the pump.
              Current:

              BMW 320i 2d 2.0 m20 -88
              BMW 325i Cabriolet 2.5 m50 -88
              BMW 316i touring 1.6 m40 -90
              BMW 320i 4d 2,2 m54 -01

my mistake, i forgot on e30s the shocks in front are inserts. i was referring to the ones i had on my e36 without realizing, my mistake.

They're probably the same way too.

All Bilstein shocks are gas charged. Not that that's all that important to you guys, but I'll throw it out there.
