How To Bypass Power Steering?

I have heard of two ways to do this.

1 - Sealed Rack - Disconnect Pump and cap the rack

2 - Unsealed Rack - Pull out tie rod (which side is unclear thus far) remove inner seal. Reinstall tie rod.

Now, are either of these right? Did you do it differently? If so, how? Please share your experiences and correct me if my above statements are incorrect.

I'd like to disable my P/S w/o swapping to a non-p/s rack.

If it were me, I'd take both banjo fittings and fashion some type of hose to connect the inlet and outlet off the rack. I'd also fill it with some type of fluid for lubrication. Then ditch the pump/hoses if you plan on never going back, otherwise, just do the same by looping the lines off the pump.

I prefer to run both hoses from the rack up to the reservoir. That allows expansion room for the fluid and keeps the rack lubricated.

What about if your rack is leaking out the end? It won't leak if it's not pressurized will it?

The leak will be less when the system isn't pressurized, but it may still leak.

It will stop leaking just as soon as that ATF gets out of the complete system, Viola, no more leak.

Pull the pinion plate and shoot it up with grease (light molly) and cap it.

If you did this, wouldn't the pump run at its max speed all the time, causing some foaming in the reservoir and thus death of the pump?
I'm looking into looping my lines together at the rack, but I have to keep my pump in the car in order to have a/c available (can't delete just one). I think a better method may be to adjust the high pressure bypass so the pump goes into bypass on its own really quickly.

Ahh... nevermind. You are correct. The high pressure bypass does exactly the same thing - routes high pressure area to low pressure area, just all inside the pump.
Still, I'm thinking of altering my bypass valve so as to underdrive my power steering.

non PS racks have a SLOWER ratio

I hope this is just for the street. I drove my car once with the PS disconnected (belt came off). it sucked, even at moderate speeds. it would really really suck for an autox course, especially with a slower ratio manual rack..

You drove your ix without power steering? I think driving an ix vs. a 318 w/o power steering would be a lot different. I've never driven an ix without power steering but I have driven an audi quattro without it and it was nearly impossible on the street, I couldn't imagine what it would have been like on an autox.
