Koni Sports too short to fit H&R OE Sport??

Hey, I’m installing Koni 86 2277Sport struts with H&R OE Sport springs on my 1989 325i convertible but I can’t compress the springs enough to secure the top nut on the strut. Im using rental compressors from Autozone. Am I missing something or do I need a professional grade spring compressor to install these? I couldn’t find a thread on this but my apologies if it’s a repeat. Thanks for the help!

Here’s a pic with the Koni installed in the housing. You can see how far the spring extends beyond the shaft. The shock I’m holding next to it is the KYB that I removed. It’s about 2 inches longer than the Koni. When I compressed the spring to try and install the Konis I bottomed the compressor all the way and still couldn’t get the top mount on. Thanks for taking a look.

If those konis are the ones im thinking of, they have a rebound spring in them. so the shock will extend if you pull on it. i think it was quite substantial, like 40-50mm

just compress that spring as much as you can with spring compressors, and do your best to get that nut on. not easy when i did it but i got there in the end.

When i put the koni next to the oem shock it looked about half the length, but eventually i got it on and everything was fine.

Just to follow up I was able to get the shocks installed after another try. I had forgotten to put the bump stops in the first time. They fit snug enough to keep the shaft extended while I compressed the springs. Wasn’t easy like e30davie said but I got it without any springs exploding in my face. Thanks again!
