    Multi piece wheel owners

how are you refinishing your hardware aka bolts and nuts. Most coaters want nothing to do with them and getting them redone with zinc then cadmium or chrome is exorbitant in prices.

Are you bust buying new or setting up a rack to fit them in and just spraying them with paint?

I would just buy new. Not worth the effort/price to clean/re-plate them. Hardware is cheap. Check out McMaster.com.

Buy new, I took 150 bolts for my bbs RM's to get re powder coated at a local shop. It took them 2 weeks to get them back to me and I was only able to salvage about 75 of them. Luckily they didnt charge since they did such a bad job but it still took 2 weeks of waiting that I could have avoided by buying new bolts. The issue is getting the heads coated while not getting any on the threads. You can not put them in a bit of cardboard like when you paint since the oven gets too hot, and if you put them in a metal sheet with holes drilled into it the overspray cures and makes removing the bolts from the sheet hard to do without cracking what is on the head. Its a pain in the ass process and if you find someone to do it right it will be about 90 cents per bolt and new bolts are (in the case of BBS RM) about $1.25 each.

Aside from the fact that if they are BBS wheels with BBS bolts, BBS says DO NOT REUSE.

They said the only bolts to reuse are titanium, but steel is a no-no. That is from a direct conversation with Michael at BBS a few weeks ago.

        He recommends BFI for bolts.

I know a few guys who refurbish wheels and they reuse the bolts. Many people have been reusing bolts for years and I have never heard of a failure. I had mine chromed and nuts zinc plated for much less than a new set of bolts and they look a lot better but my friend does bulk so that helps bring the price down. Been rolling on my rims a while now...no issues but hey, do what's best for you.

They will not fail at grade 10.8 with so little torque on them. When we redo 3 piece wheels on airplanes we re use the hardware in many case.

I have 3 sets that need new hardware so that is why I was inquisitive.

I wonder how important the splined part is. If we can just go with off the shelf gr 10.9 hardware that'd be great. Then again the inner diameters on the face can be designed for that splined outer diameter. Le sigh.

I've had a hard time finding a source for M7, 12pt hex head screws.

                  It'd be great if someone had a source, that aren't BFI/Hoffman Racing/etc.

I goto the bench stock bin and grab them. But that is one or two here or there. Not enough to do all my wheels.

Have you contacted aircraft spruce? They are pricey but they are good.

does anyone have one bbs rc090/style 5 bolt/nut they can lend me?

I marred one up pretty bad on removal.

A tumbler works well to get them cleaned, then you can paint or polish them.

Takes freaking for ever, tried that method. Worked but extremely slow, what material did you use in your tumbler?

No, I was trying to find bolts cheaper than BFI/Hoffman.

But I've accepted if I want black bolts that where they are going to have to come from.

That's the way I was heading for one set at least, since the centers are nagaro'ish in color.

Could not find a powder coat code for nagaro so just used a darker in house color.
