Can we please sticky the snow tire thread? This comes up every year.
But to play the game I run Dunlop Graspics and have used Firestone Winterforce, like them alot since they are studdable. Last year N.E. got snow in the feet range vs ice. winter tires on all four corners is the way to go.Comment

Don't get General Altimax Arctics. I had a set of 175/60's last year that were some of the worst tires I've ever driven on. They worked ok in the snow (got stuck twice, could have been due to ride height though), but in the dry they rolled around like a pig in mud. Any thing over 60mph the car would start swaying and swerving.Byron

Snow tires do that, unless you get performance snows.Don't get General Altimax Arctics. I had a set of 175/60's last year that were some of the worst tires I've ever driven on. Personally, since I'm not so worried about plowing through deep snow, I'm using the Hankook W300. It's not the greatest in the snow, but it feels decent the rest of the time and has really excellent wet traction. (I have to admit that I was genuinely amazed by how bad the Blizzak WS-50s were in the wet - hope that was improved for the newer ones.)2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD LBZ/Allison

my blizzak WS50s seem OK in the wet - well, cornering forces aren't great, but they do well at hydroplane resisance.
also, it would be better to go with a taller tire, rather than a shorter one. taller/narrow = more straight line traction. 185/60 or 65 is too short. but 14" snow tire sizes are kinda limited these days. :(Comment

I second the Hankook I-Pikes. I'm running the directional version, love them. You can hear a lot of road noise until about 30km/h, then they are dead silent.
No speed wobbles, but dont take corners fast, no sidewall strength.______________________________________

Because that's against the point of snow tires... They're made of a super soft compound to stay flexible in cold weather and grip. And most of them are made so that you can deflate them a little for more traction and slower driving.
Conti Extreme winter contacts. Love them.Comment
