I had S.Drives on a previous (non-BMW) DD, and they were great for the first half of their life, then I sold the car. I just bought a set of 16" wheels for my E30 and was considering S.Drives for them. Where'd you get yours?

Also, for those wanting to calculate the differences in wheels, tires and offsets, I found this neat tool: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

Z1 star specs on tire rack are $557.00 shipped. Probably cheaper at the local tire shop.

I'm convinced that people who say they like their 512s have never actually had a decent set of tires. I bolted on a set of wheels with some 512s mounted on them and it seriously made my E30 unenjoyable to drive. I absolutely love my Pilot Super Sports and I don't think I'll be able to ever run anything even close to a 512 on my car.

You don't know what you're missing. They're amazing in the rain, the cold, and they do all right at the track.

But hey, at least the ones you got are supposed to be pretty quiet. All the better to hear you [M20] with, my dear.

Z1 star specs vs. Pilot Super Sports

How do these compare and how does their tread sit?

how do they compare to what I have?

I've driven with both in my E30 and can tell you that the Star Specs inspire a bit more confidence in the dry, but are pretty worrisome when you're on a wet road surface. The Super Sports are a lot quieter, ride better, last longer, and feel better in the wet. My coworker and I run the same size and we decided to trade tires for a week just to compare :p. All considered I prefer the Pilots, but they are a bit more expensive. If I were choosing between the two for an auto-cross set it would be the Star Specs no doubt, but with every day driving in mind the Michelins win my favor.

Now what I really want to try out is the Pilot Sport Cup. Those just look like way too much fun.

I have nexen cp641 in the rear, im hpy with the grip but they suck inthe rain, decent sidewall. Also running a nexen n2000 in the front very nice flat sidewall and the run prety wide for a 205/50

When tires are $140 each I feel bad smoking the hell out of them in 2nd gear. The amount I spent ($400) was pretty much the limit of what I wanted to put down for tires. It's not that I can't afford the more expensive tires, I just don't want to! Haha.

S.drives aren't perfect but they definitely have some their virtues. Good read: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/cheap-skates/

To each their own. that's the one thing I refuse to do with my car, but I love grip.

Holy shit tire prices have gone up a lot since 08. Also, the article said the Falken 912 replaced the 512 and that's not true. They're still making the 512 today.

When I bought tires for my 15's about 5 months ago my local shop told me that the 512's were no longer available and he sold me the 912's. Perhaps there's old stock still around?
