going from a 195 65 14 to a 205 50 15 loses about 3 mm overall diameter

I don't even know why you posted this BUT 205/50/15 is an undersized tire. The difference is NOT 3mm, it's almost 1 inch. The correct sizes for a 15" wheel would be 205/55 or 225/50.
