Lets talk tires.....

So I am due for a new set of tires. I have 16x8 rota slipstreams. I am looking for a 225/45-16 or a 225/50-16. My fender are rolled pretty hard so i can fit whatever i need to. Car currently has 225-45-16 Yokohama AVS ES100(280 AA A - 22lbs). They are pretty good in the dry, but a bit slippery, and pathetic in the wet.

The candidates fall into two primary categories. Ultra high performance vs regular high performance. Basically a UTQG rating of 140-160 vs a rating of 280-300.

all the tires are about 25lbs each and about 10/32" starting tread.

Super awesome high performance category:

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 "Star Spec"
225-50-16. UTQG rating: 200 A A. Price $138 per. Made in Japan

I have heard a lot of good stuff about these tires, but they are pricy.

Hankook RS-3
225-50-16 UTQG rating: 140 A A. Price $119 per. Made in Korea

I have also heard good stuff about these. My e30 was made for the track even if it doesnt find its way there that often, but I do a lot of miles, and I need the tires to be worth a damn in the wet.

Slightly lower performance category:

Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110
225-50-16 UTQG rating: 280 AA A Price:$89 per. Made in Korea

These seem like a good all around tire, but I dont have any personal experience with it.

Dunlop Direzza DZ101
225-50-16 UTQG rating: 300 A A Price:$94 per. Made in Japan

these have kinda crappy ratings on tirerack.com but again I dont have any experience.

Yokohama S.Drives
225-50-16 UTQG rating: 300 AA A Price:$100 per. Made in Japan
Basically the same tire as I have right now.

Hankooks are the best tires in the dry by far, and they're not deadly in the rain like a Kumho Ecsta XS. The DZ101 Star Spec is a great tire, but it does lose out to the hankooks in the dry, but it's going to wear a bit slower and definitely be safer in the wet.

I don't understand why the DZ101's have a bad rating on Tirerack. I realize they aren't at the same level as the starspecs and the RS3's but they have been good overall for me. I had to run them at the track a couple times and was pretty impressed for a little bit harder street tire. I would take them over the S-Drives any day. I'm on my second set and will probably continue to buy them as street tires for a while.

This tire will see more time on the street than on the track. And here in texas it can be nice and clear one minute and then torrential flood from hell the next. So of the top grip tires the nod goes to the Star spec.

on a stock car, that can be ok. On this car that will not cut it.

They have really poor ratings in the customer section. People leave them poor reviews - thye are supposedly bad in the wet, wear quickly, and dont offer good traction for the money.

Sorry I herped, and clicked on "other sizes" However what makes these tires any better than the evo v12s? the ratings on tire rack are about the same...
