Friend who works at a tire shop says it's illegal in Illinois to sell a welded alloy wheel, but another friend says as long as it's done professionally it's okay.

I have had it done before and it wasn't a problem. Some rims I bought had a split on the edge probably like what you had. They welded it up and smoothed the lip out so it didn't leak.

Depends. Did they open up the crack first before they welded or is it just a surface weld? A lot of places just do a surface weld and they re-crack.

Update: Turns out it was professionally repaired by Wheels Of America and they said there's not an issue--that if they repaired it, it's was deemed all good. Went to have tires mounted on them yesterday at another store (my friend's store is too far from me now) and they said they can't do it for liability reasons. Heading out to a Firestone shop that said no problem, so we'll see...

Don't you love the world we live in where people no longer guarantee anything and won't hardly do anything for you...

Firestone installer said it appears to be a well done repair, swapped my tires from the Style 5's to the RD's and balanced for $59.97.

Love the classic period look of them on my E34 Touring!
