R888's are a long-life r-compound tire, great for track days, spec racing, and enduros. Some guys are ballsy enough to drive them on the street. The Spec E30 guys seem to prefer the Toyo RA-1 to the R888. Not as much grip as a Kumho V710 or a Hoosier, but definitely better than a street tire (a.k.a. tread wear > 140). They handle heat pretty well.'89 325i track sloot

I would not daily R888's, to and from the track, sure. Dunlop Direzza Z-1 Star Spec, Bridgestone RE01-R, RE-11, Hankook RS3, etc are what you should be looking at. See Extreme Performance Summer tires at Tire rack for some in-depth comparisons. I ran the older Bridgestone RE01-R's at a 4-hour open track even, an autocross, and commuted on them all in the past week. They hold up well, grip great, etc.'89 325i track sloot

Just adding my two cents here. I was running R-S3s until a nail took out one of my tires a couple weeks ago. The tires are on backorder until sometime this month at the Tire Rack, so I had to scramble to mount something else.
I took the opportunity to mount up some RE-11s because of their good reputation, and also, I just couldn't resist the $100 mail in rebate. I guess the Yokohama AD08s also have a rebate on them, but were slightly more expensive. Meanwhile the price of the RE-11s crept up so the current price difference is negligible.
The RE-11s are quiet on the highway, and the sidewalls are noticeably stiffer than the Hankooks. Before, I could hear tire noise. Now, I can only hear my loud exhaust droning.
I did an autocross with them yesterday, and I have to say, it's a very forgiving tire. Ultimate grip levels might have been around the same, but there was, in my opinion, a lot more feedback (noise, feel through the wheel) as the tire loaded up in the turns. I think the R-S3s probably offered more ultimate grip, but it was hard to feel it since I am not that experienced, and the tire had quite a bit of "give" to it, even at 40 psi hot.Comment
