Just installed Falken 512's on stock 'weaves in 205/60/14. Much better handling and response compared to my old dry-rotted generic tires in 195/65. I've heard bad things and good things about the Falkens but so far I'm happy (also after running the same tire make and size on my RX7).
EDIT
Also, from DTD these bitches were only $288 shipped to my door. Can't complain about the price!Leave a comment:

So I need 2 new tires and cant decide which size to go with. The car is lowered 2.5 up front and the same in the back except the back will be raised slightly. The tires are going to be for my rear axle. I am running stock basketweaves on my 1991 318is. I am looking for a meaty tire that isnt too expensive. Road noise isnt a concern as much as long as it doesnt sound like im riding on rim. Whats a good suggestion on size and brand?Leave a comment:

Just got in my Dunlop Star Specs for my weaves. Repainting the wheels and will have new tires on tomorrow. Very excited for these highly rated tires.
Interesting thing is that I called several tire dealers in the area, both chains and locals (one local, Tucker Tire in Laguna Niguel, is a very high volume dealer for all of OC), and they said that they cannot get this tire at all. About 1 month ago they were able to give me a price on the tires, but I called back to order them and said they are not available. They called Dunlop directly and got the same message. Dont know how they cannot get their hands on this. Does Tire Rack have an exclusive on this tire for this size of wheel, 14"? I am going to bring my invoice in to them to see for themselves. BTW, Tucker's original price quote was cheaper than Tire Racks when install and shipping was factored in.Leave a comment:

Just adding my two cents here. I was running R-S3s until a nail took out one of my tires a couple weeks ago. The tires are on backorder until sometime this month at the Tire Rack, so I had to scramble to mount something else.
I took the opportunity to mount up some RE-11s because of their good reputation, and also, I just couldn't resist the $100 mail in rebate. I guess the Yokohama AD08s also have a rebate on them, but were slightly more expensive. Meanwhile the price of the RE-11s crept up so the current price difference is negligible.
The RE-11s are quiet on the highway, and the sidewalls are noticeably stiffer than the Hankooks. Before, I could hear tire noise. Now, I can only hear my loud exhaust droning.
I did an autocross with them yesterday, and I have to say, it's a very forgiving tire. Ultimate grip levels might have been around the same, but there was, in my opinion, a lot more feedback (noise, feel through the wheel) as the tire loaded up in the turns. I think the R-S3s probably offered more ultimate grip, but it was hard to feel it since I am not that experienced, and the tire had quite a bit of "give" to it, even at 40 psi hot.Leave a comment:

I would not daily R888's, to and from the track, sure. Dunlop Direzza Z-1 Star Spec, Bridgestone RE01-R, RE-11, Hankook RS3, etc are what you should be looking at. See Extreme Performance Summer tires at Tire rack for some in-depth comparisons. I ran the older Bridgestone RE01-R's at a 4-hour open track even, an autocross, and commuted on them all in the past week. They hold up well, grip great, etc.Leave a comment:

Ok. I am planning on doing a few autocross and track days this year and am looking for some good tires that I could also daily on.R888's are a long-life r-compound tire, great for track days, spec racing, and enduros. Some guys are ballsy enough to drive them on the street. The Spec E30 guys seem to prefer the Toyo RA-1 to the R888. Not as much grip as a Kumho V710 or a Hoosier, but definitely better than a street tire (a.k.a. tread wear > 140). They handle heat pretty well.Leave a comment:
