    Turbofans for non-RS wheels

Hey guys, so I recently started on a project that I am really enjoying so far. That is to make a set of custom turbo fans like RSs had for my RAYS Gram Lights 57v. The intent is not to make replicas either, I would like to do flow analysis on them after I have a few prototypes so that braking efficiency is improved when they are installed. So far I have made a quick CAD model and installed them in a slightly smaller version onto a bottlecap CAD model I found. The plan is to make prototypes by machining them along with the vanes.

The current method I have in mind to attach them is to use an aluminum spacer that attaches to my wheel studs and bolt the fan covers onto that.

If there is a lot of interest, I would like to make them custom for other wheels as well.

    Seems like a sweet idea

I'd be interested in a pair if the wheels I'm planning on running didn't already have covers (Style 20s AKA M-System "Turbines")

    In for finished product though

Thanks! I'll try to post updates as I go along. I'm gonna be busy next week so it'll be a couple weeks until I can order material and start cutting, but in the meantime I'm going to keep refining my design and make it fit my own wheels better.

I tried this a few years ago and its hard to get them to look right. You may want to design some concavity to the plate or a more interesting feature in the center for a cap of some sort. A flat plate with a hole looking at the original center cap may not look right.

How do you plan on attaching them to your existing wheels? I tried features that grab the head of the lugs like you see on cheap hub caps and it never really worked.

Good luck! I'm in for a set if they look sweet.

I am definitely considering some concavity to them, I was just trying to avoid a long 3d milling operation on the first set, but that will make a big difference I think. I was also thinking about making either custom stickers like the RSs (with a picture of a RAYS wheel in my case) or some wacky color.

I think the attachment method I came up with will be strong enough. The current plan is to machine an aluminum cylinder with threads for studs on one side and threads for the small bolts on the other. The studs have a lot of extra threads so I think this will be a strong mounting area. I have an alternate method that would use an aluminum cage that uses nut to attach to the studs and has offset holes to bolt to the cover. I'll post pics of what I have when I'm at work later.

Sweet, obviously I'll keep you updated!

Why would you mill these? Wouldnt you form them from sheet?

I'm going to make them out of plastic so it would be pretty easy to CNC machine them. If it were metal, I would probably use a sheet and have the fins tack welded on.

I attached a picture of the wheels the fans are going on and roughly modeled them (dimensions could be a bit more accurate). The fans look much better on dished wheels imo. I'll start working on the fin shape next week now that I'm pretty happy with the mounting
